Hello, fellow readers, and Happy Thanksgiving if you celebrate the holiday! Today I will be discussing a few of the books I am thankful for.
1. The Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling
Okay, I’m cheating here because there are seven books in this series, but I can never thank Harry Potter enough for sparking my love of reading and for jump starting my interest in fantasy stories. Until I read Harry Potter, I was only reading The Babysitters Club series. I know I read other books, like Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark and the Wayside School series, but I was not branching out into fantastical stories. I am thankful to the Harry Potter series because it feels like coming home every time I re-read the books. I feel like a kid again, and I am forever grateful for that feeling.
2. Dark Matter by Blake Crouch
Somewhere along the way, I lost my love for reading. I blame the required reading in AP English for four years, but truthfully, I stopped reading because I was afraid it made me lame or nerdy. The longer I went without reading, the less I missed it. In 2018, I made a resolution to start reading again. I never lost my love for visiting a bookstore, but I wanted to jump back in to reading. Dark Matter was the second book I read in 2018, and it reminded me what it feels like to get lost in a good book. My goal in 2018 was 12 books (one book per month), but I ended up reading over 50 books that year.
3. Josh and Hazel’s Guide to Not Dating by Christina Lauren
If you follow me on bookstagram or keep up with my reviews on my blog, then you probably know that romance is not my genre. However, I decided to give Josh and Hazel a chance on a whim. I had just read several thriller and fantasy books and none of them had been spectacular, so I was in a bit of a slump and wanted something different. Josh and Hazel was EXACTLY what I needed! I laughed so hard while listening to this book. I have a feeling I will come back to this one again and again when I need a pick me up.
4. The To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before (series) by Jenny Han
I’m cheating again, but I could not pick just one book from this series! I was apprehensive about reading TATBILB until I saw the trailer for the Netflix movie. I like to read the book before seeing the movie if I’m interested, so I immediately placed a hold at the library. I flew through the book within a day or two! Then I ordered the next two books in the series and binged them back to back. This series reminded me about the innocence of first love in high school, and I loved reliving the feeling through Lara Jean.
5. Behind Her Eyes by Sarah Pinborough
This is the most recently read book on this list. I am thankful for this book because it gives me hope there are still books out there with twist endings that will knock me off my feet! The ending is very polarizing among the bookish community, but I loved that I didn’t guess it until the very last second! It was refreshing to read a book that kept me guessing because I read so many thrillers and eventually it starts to feel like every “shocking” or “twist” ending has been done before.
What book(s) are you thankful for? Let me know in the comments!
