Hello, fellow readers! Today I am reviewing a super hyped book in the bookish community. Vicious by V.E. Schwab has been on my radar for the past year, but I kept putting it off because of all the hype around the book and the sequel that released last year. I have only read two books by V.E./Victoria Schwab, but I am forever a fan after reading Vicious.
Description: Victor and Eli are college roommates working on their senior dissertations. Eli decides to determine if EOs (ExtraOrdinaries) exist. EOs are people who have superhero-like abilities. Eventually, the two roommates begin to form a hypothesis on how EOs are created. And then they decide to experiment on themselves to prove their hypothesis. That is when things go horribly wrong for Victor and Eli.
What I Liked: So, the first time I heard the plot of this book, I immediately got X-Men vibes. And there are some parallels, but I think Vicious goes deeper than the relationship between Professor X and Magneto. With X-Men, it is pretty clear who is good and who is evil, but I never felt that way while reading Vicious.
The story is told in alternating timelines, which adds to the suspense of the novel. The book starts out in present time and jumps back ten years for the history between Victor and Eli. The pacing is wonderful and I never felt a lull in the story at all. I appreciated that eventually we got some background on some of the supporting characters as well. I also really loved Victor and Eli and as their story unfolds, I found myself changing my opinions on the two characters.
What I Didn’t Like: I don’t like that I bought the paperback edition and now have to wait until January 2020 to purchase the matching paperback for Vengeful.
Final Thoughts: I gave Vicious five stars. I loved the concept for the story and thought it was wonderfully written. You could technically read this as a standalone probably, but I definitely want more Victor and Eli!
