Review | The Invited by Jennifer McMahon

Hello, fellow readers! I love a good supernatural movie, but I have struck out with supernatural books in the last year. I requested and was granted a copy of The Invited by Jennifer McMahon by NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.

Description: Helen inherits a large amount of money, so she and her husband, Nate, decide to buy some land in the countryside and build a house themselves. The land they purchase comes with a dark history and Helen begins to research the history of the infamous Hattie, a spirit said to haunt the land because she was hung as a witch.

What I Liked: The few times that there were supernatural elements present were spooky. I really liked the legend of Hattie Breckenridge and the flashback chapters throughout the books. The setting was perfect for this story as well.

What I Didn’t Like: This book had way too much going on. It is more of a mystery/thriller with a slight paranormal aspect. I was hoping for a scarier reading experience, but ultimately, the plot focuses on the couple building the home and the mysterious disappearance of a woman in town. There was a bit much going on by the end. I also found the ending to be very predictable.

Final Thoughts: This was a solid three star book for me. If I was giving half star ratings this year, I might would bump it down to 2.5. The Invited was a very average book. If you like mysteries and don’t mind a ghost, then this is worth checking out. There is nothing new here, but I was interested enough to read most of it in one day.

The Invited will be released April 30, 2019.
