Review | In the Tall Grass by Stephen King and Joe Hill

Hello, fellow readers! I read my first novella of 2019 last week, and it was quite disappointing. I was watching a YouTube video about upcoming horror movies, and the video mentioned an upcoming movie based on Stephen King and Joe Hill’s novella, In the Tall Grass. I was intrigued because the video said it was such a shocking story and they didn’t know how a movie could be made from concept. And then they left things at that. So of course, I was curious and found the novella on Scribd.

Description: The novella is very short, so I don’t want to say too much and give away the plot. The basic premise is a brother and sister are driving across the country together. They are passing a large field of tall grass next to an old church when they both hear a child’s voice calling for help. They pull over at the church and get out to investigate.

What I Liked: The idea sounded alot like the beginning of Jeepers Creepers because it is about a brother and sister duo who are travelling together. That alone was enough to pull me in. I was immediately curious about what could possibly be in the grass, and from the moment the duo steps in the grass, things begin to get suspenseful.

What I Didn’t Like: But then King and Hill take the story from a place of suspense to downright disgusting for the sake of shock value. Maybe this is their calling card-I have never read much from either author. I typically don’t read King, not because his books are scary, but because I find his books to be overly descriptive and lengthy. I still haven’t made it through IT after almost two years. But I digress..

Final Thoughts: This got two stars from me, and that is only because I loved the idea for this story, but the events in the final moments of the story are just too gross and disturbing. Stay away from this if you don’t like gory reads.

  1. Sorry to hear you didn’t like it so much. I enjoy both King and Hill’s writing so maybe I will like this. I never heard of this novella before, thanks for letting me know about it.

    1. The idea was intriguing, but I was not a fan of the gore! But I’m glad I was able to introduce you to it! Maybe you will like it more than I did. If you have a King or Hill book recommendation that is not gory, please let me know!
