Blogmas 2018 | Bookish Things You’re a Grinch About

This post is technically a Top Five Wednesday prompt, but I loved the idea so much that I decided to use it for Blogmas.

1.  Writing in Books
I would actually cringe in high school when my teachers would tell us to write in our books. I prefer for my books to look brand new even after reading them a few times.

2.  Books that Focus only on a Relationship or Insta-Love
The best example of this for me is Caraval. I’ve stated several times on my blog that I think Stephanie Garber missed a great opportunity to explore the world of Caraval. Instead, she decided to write an insta-love YA contemporary and set it in a magical world that we actually learn very little about. I know the book is very popular in the bookish community, but I feel like it could have been so much better.

As a side note to this, I also hate when everyone is paired off. Like, why can’t people just be friends? Why does there always have to be a romance?

3. Unnecessary Sequels
Honestly, this probably bothers me more in movies than with books, but sometimes I will see people say certain books are unnecessary to a series because it does not move the plot along, and it really turns me off to reading the series. The best examples of this are the ToG or ACOTAR series. If the book is adding to the plot, then write as many books as you want!

4. Overly Descriptive Books
My first thought is Stephen King’s IT. I can’t finish the book, even listening to the audiobook. It is too descriptive and I much prefer the miniseries to the book. IT has prevented me from even trying another Stephen King book.

5. The Overdone Drunk, Damaged Female Narrator (who ends up being an unreliable narrator)
It was fine at first, but then every psychological thriller started using this trope, and it became boring and predictable. If you read my blog or follow me on bookstagram, you know I read a ton of psychological thrillers, so I feel like they have all started to follow the same formula because it sells.

Whew. Okay so there are the bookish things that I am a Grinch about. Honestly, I could have written a top 10 list instead of top 5 probably. What are some of your answers? I would love to know! Leave me a comment below!
