Blogoween 2018 | Trick or Treat Tag

Happy Tag Tuesday! Today’s tag is Trick or Treat. The idea of the tag is to list some books that you have read and you decided if they were a trick (did not live up to your expectations) or a treat (met or exceeded your expectations. So let’s get started!

Verdict: TREAT
I chose this book as my August BOTM even though I did not think I was going to like it. I am very picky about contemporary fiction, and this one sounded slightly ridiculous. But I was pleasantly surprised by this book. I became invested in the characters and I was in tears by the end.

Verdict: TRICK
If you have been following my blog, then you know my hatred for Caraval. The concept had so much potential, but the author threw it all out the window for insta-love and one of the most unlikable main characters I’ve ever had to read.

Verdict: TREAT
I did not like I would like TATBILB, but when the teaser trailer for the Netflix movie dropped, I was intrigued. The plot did not look quite as ridiculous on the trailer as I had imagined it in my mind. I picked up the first book at the library, devoured it in 24 hours, and immediately ordered the rest of the series online.

Verdict: TRICK
I have seen many reviews that were the same as mine. The Hazel Wood is trash. The only interesting parts of this book were the two stories from the fairy tale book. This book felt like two completely different stories that were thrown together. The last third of the book was so confusing and did not match the tone for the rest of the book. I could go on and on, but this is definitely one of my most disappointing reads of 2018.

Verdict: TREAT
I have never read books about faeries, nor have I ever had any interest in reading books about faeries. Booktube raved about this book, so I picked it up on a whim at the library one day. It was one of my favorite books this year. I’ve been counting down the days til I can get my hands on the sequel.

Verdict: TRICK
I was really excited when I got an ARC of the Hocus Pocus sequel. But it did not live up to my expectations. I thought it was more juvenile than the original story and I didn’t need a novelization of the original movie in this book. If they ever do make another movie, I hope they do better with the story and make it less teen angsty.

Thanks so much for reading my Trick or Treat Tag. If you decide to play along, please leave me a comment so I can check out your answers!

    1. I don’t like insta-love and I thought too much of the story focused on the narrator’s infatuation with the dude. There was so much potential for an awesome world, but the author decided to make it all about the romance. It just wasn’t what I was expecting.
