I am showing my age here, but I grew up in the days of SNICK on Nickelodeon. There was a show that came on at the end of SNICK called Are You Afraid of the Dark? (AYAOTD). I think I was not allowed to watch it (or was too scared to watch it!), but eventually I started going to my grandparents’ house to watch it.This Canadian anthology show centered around a group of friends that called themselves, “The Midnight Society.” They met at an undisclosed location in the woods every week and took turns telling a scary story. You will find some great cameos of actors like Ryan Gosling, Neve Campbell, Elisha Cuthbert, and Rachel Blanchard before they were famous. If you have never watched AYAOTD, I encourage you to check out the intro. SO DANG CREEPY.
The earlier seasons have some of my absolute favorite episodes. My husband makes fun of me for still watching this show, but it is so nostalgic for me. I don’t know if I would appreciate the show if I had not grown up watching it. But if you have never watched the show and think you might like it, here are my favorite episodes of AYAOTD.
1. “The Tale of Laughing in the Dark” (Season 1, Episode 2)
This episode takes place as the fair rolls in to town (do other places still do this, or is it a Southern thing?). Two friends go to the funhouse and one of the friends dares the other to steal Zeebo the Clown’s nose at the end of the attraction. But they soon learn that there may be some truth to the legend of Zeebo.
2. “The Tale of the Lonely Ghost” (Season 1, Episode 3)
Amanda is sent to stay with her aunt and snobby cousin for the summer. The cousin tells Amanda that in order to hang out with her and her friends, she has to stay the night alone in the house next door, which is rumored to be haunted.
3. “The Tale of the Super Specs” (Season 1, Episode 6)
A boy buys his girlfriend a pair of glasses at a magic shop. Once she starts to wear them, she realizes she can see strange figures dressed in all black, but no one else can see them. The end of this one was so scary to me!
4. “The Tale of the Thirteenth Floor” (Season 2, Episode 4)
Two siblings use the abandoned thirteenth floor of their apartment building to play hockey. The former tenants mysteriously disappeared years ago. But one day, they go to play hockey and a mysterious toy company has moved in. Then strange things start to happen in their building. Things that can’t be explained..
5. “The Tale of the Midnight Ride” (Season 3, Episode 1)
This story takes place on Halloween night in the legendary town of Sleepy Hollow. Is the legend of the Headless Horseman more than just a legend? New kid, Ian, will soon find out.
6. “The Tale of Watcher’s Woods” (Season 3, Episode 2)
I love a scary story that centers around a summer camp or a boarding school. This tale takes place at a summer camp where three girls previously went missing in the “Watcher’s Woods.” The girls were never seen again, Ever since, people have avoided being in the woods because even if you do make it out alive, you will be crazy.
7. “The Tale of the Renegade Virus” (Season 4, Episode 3)
Okay, this episode is totally ridiculous, but you have to remember that computers and the Internet were a new thing that nobody really understood at the time. I was terrified by the virus in this episode. I’m not even going to tell you anymore than that because it is ridiculous that I was scared, but the very last scene of the story creeped me out!
8. “The Tale of the Chameleons” (Season, 5, Episode 5)
This episode features Tia and Tamera Mowry, but they do not play sisters in this story. Two girls, Janice and Sharon, go to the pet store and Janice is bitten by a chameleon. A creepy kid in the store tells the girls, “Bite you once, bite you twice, a little water, pay the price.” The chameleon escapes the pet store when Janice drops it, and it follows her and Sharon home. The next day, Sharon notices her friend is acting different..
9. “The Tale of the Vacant Lot” (Season 5, Episode 10)
I feel like the episodes in season five became a little more mature and the show was trying to grow up with its audience. This episode features an unpopular girl who desperately wants to be accepted at school. One day, she finds a store run by a mysterious woman who keeps her face hidden. The woman tells the girl she can have anything she wants for free. But the girl soon realizes that nothing ever comes without a price.
I have the entire series downloaded and watch it often when I need something on in the background. Sometimes you can find full episodes on YouTube, but I know you can buy the DVDs or digital copies of the show on Amazon. If you have ever watched this show, please chat with me in the comments about it!
