Tag Tuesday | Reader Problems

I first saw this tag at Classy x Book Reviews and knew I wanted to try it soon. Make sure you check out their post as well. I love doing these tag posts every Tuesday!

You have 20,000 books on your TBR list. How in the world do you decide which book to read next?
I am a mood reader. I also try to alternate genres. So if I read fantasy, I like to read a thriller or contemporary next. But when I am really in a slump, I like to do the Try a Chapter Tag. You can see my most recent one here.

You’re halfway through a book and you’re just not loving it, do you quit or are you committed?
My philosophy is “life is too short to read bad books.” When I first got back in to reading this year, I forced myself to finish several books that I was not enjoying. But my TBR is too long for me to waste time on books that I’m not invested in. I also find that I will lose precious days of reading if I’m in the middle of a book I don’t like because I never feel compelled to sit down and read.

The end of the year is coming and you’re so close, yet still so far away from your reading goal on GoodReads. Do you try to catch up and how?
If I am really close, I would probably listen to some audiobooks to catch up. I set the bar low for myself this year (12 books) and I passed my goal by May. Next year, I will set the bar a little higher for myself.

The covers of a series you love do. not. match. How do you cope?
It’s whatever to me. I don’t buy many books because I don’t re-read books often.

Everyone and their mother really loves a book that you really didn’t like. Who do you bond with over shared feelings?
Guaranteed someone on bookstagram shares my feelings at some point.

You’re reading a book in public and it’s going to make you cry. How do you deal?
I make it a personal goal to pick books that will not make me cry in the first place. I also don’t have opportunities to read in public because I work and then I come home so…yeah.

A sequel of a book you love just came out, but you’ve forgotten a lot from the prior novel. Will you reread the book? Skip the sequel? Try to find a synopsis on GoodReads? Just cry in frustration?!
Depends on the situation. If it has been years between sequels, I’m going to re-read the prior book. But if the sequel is released within the year, I will probably find a synopsis or find some spoiler-y reviews and move on to the sequel. Most sequels spend time at the beginning recapping the story so far anyway.

You do not want anyone, ANYONE, borrowing your books. How do you politely tell people no when they ask?
I struggle with this so much. Luckily, I don’t have friends that read, so it is usually not a problem.

Reading ADD, you’ve picked up and put down five books in the last month. How do you get out of your reading slump?
I have not figured out how to get out of a reading slump. I’ve been in one since August honestly. I find that YA contemporary usually helps me beat a slump, but I am out of YA contemporaries that interest me right now.

There are so many new books coming out that you’re dying to read! How many do you actually buy?
Depends on how hyped i am for the book. Usually I try to wait until the price drops on Amazon or my library gets a copy. My teacher salary does not allow for many book purchases.

After you’ve bought all of the new books that you can’t wait to get to, how long do they sit on your shelf before you read them?
Usually weeks or months. When I do buy books, I buy from BookOutlet. Of course I buy books I’m in the mood to read right then, but by the time the books come, I am either not in the mood for those anymore or I’m in the middle of a couple of other books at the moment. And then a library hold comes through or another book on my TBR catches my eye…

Which reader problem do you relate to most? Answer one (or all!) of the prompts in the comments! I would love to read your answers.

  1. Okay, so these are actually such real problems for me haha. I especially have a hard time with the sequel one. Like, I always forget what happens in the first book, but sometimes I just don’t have time for a reread, you know? So I try my best to remember what the heck was happening in the series by reading the blurbs on Goodreads. This happened to me recently with the newest book in the Ember in the Ashes series. I spent like the first couple of chapters pretty confused because I couldn’t remember ANYTHING hahahsobs. Anyways, thanks for a lovely post 🙂

    1. I am so excited for The Wicked King, but I realized the other day I’ve already forgotten half of The Cruel Prince! I really hope there is some quality recapping in The Wicked King because I know I will not have time for a reread any time soon.

      1. I AM SO EXCITED FOR THAT BOOK TOOOOO. The Cruel Prince just blew me away and down the street for like, five miles. But yeah, besides remembering that I loved it….I don’t really remember what happened either *facepalm* haha
