Book Review | The Chrysalis by Brendan Deneen (DNF)

I am cheating with this review a bit by having it on Thriller Thursday. There is a mystery in the book, however, it is not what I would call “thrilling.” I hate that I DNF’d this one, but it did not capture my attention. I appreciate Tor Books and Netgalley for sending me an advance copy of this book for my honest review.

**Disclaimer: As with all of my reviews, I do post the entire plot synopsis before my review. However, I will always recommend for Thriller Thursday reviews that you skip the plot synopsis. Thrillers are better when you go in knowing little to nothing about the plot. Happy reading!

The Chrysalis by Brendan Deneen (ARC) (DNF)

Goodreads Rating: ★★★☆☆ 3.07
My Rating: ★★★☆☆
Page Count: 304 pages
Genre(s): “Horror”, general fiction, sci-fi
Publisher: Tor Books
Published: September 4, 2018

Plot: Welcome to the dark side of suburbia.

Barely employed millennials Tom and Jenny Decker have to grow up fast when they lose their cheap Manhattan apartment. Leaving “the city” is hard, but the blow is softened when they stumble upon a surprisingly affordable house in the suburbs.

For Tom, the bills, the mortgage, and Jenny’s unexpected pregnancy add up to terror. He’s not ready for this kind of responsibility.

Then he finds the thing in the basement. It makes him feel like a winner even as it scrambles his senses. A new job soon has him raking in the big bucks–enough that Jenny can start making her entrepreneurial dreams come true.

The Deckers’ dream home conceals more than one deadly secret. As Tom’s obsession with the basement grows, Jenny realizes that to save her family, she must expose everything. Before it destroys them all.

No one ever really wants to grow up…but sometimes behaving like an adult is the only way to survive.

Review: This book was not bad, but I would not call it “horror” or “thriller.” I am 99% sure it was categorized as “horror” when I requested it on Netgalley. I notice it is not just “general fiction,” which I think is a more accurate genre. I read until the 40% mark and then did not pick the book back up for two days. That is when I knew it was time to call it quits!

The story is basically a fiction tale about a young couple who is having a string of bad luck. Their rent doubled, so they bought a house. Then the wife loses her job. The husband has to give up his dreams for a corporate career. Just normal, everyday adult life type stuff. The only interesting element to the story was the chrysalis in the basement of the new house they’ve bought. But we only get glimpses of the most interesting part of the story here and there. And the chrysalis makes the book more sci-fi than horror. So either way, I feel very misled about this book.

Final Thoughts: It is hard to have many final thoughts about the book. I probably should have stuck with it, but because the book was not what I expected, I lost interest quickly. I did enjoy the writing style-it was a super easy read. But the story did not draw me in as much as I expected. I still rated this three stars because it is well written. Other reviews have noted that it should not be categorized as “horror,” and I think that is why the book only has a three star rating on Goodreads.

Thank you so much for reading my review! Don’t forget to follow my blog so you don’t miss a review!
