Book List | Books I Thought I Would Love But Didn’t

Hello, fellow readers! Today’s post is about the books I thought I would love didn’t. I probably should have written about books I thought I would hate but didn’t first, but I can think of more books that disappointed me rather than surprised me. So here are the books I’ve read so far this year that I thought I would love by didn’t!

Genuine Fraud by e. lockhart

This was my first e. lockhart book and it may have been my last. Genuine Fraud was an impulse check out at the library. The story is written in reverse chronological order, which I found intriguing. I kept reading this book expecting some kind of twist at the end (which is actually the beginning) but literally nothing happens in this book. All of the characters were terrible and other reviewers have said it is a direct ripoff of The Talented Mr. Ripley (I’ve never seen the movie).

Caraval by Stephanie Garber

I wanted to like this book. I tried to read the physical book last fall, and the writing bothered me. Then I found the audiobook on the Hoopla app from my library, so I decided to give it a try again. I should not have bothered. The writing is so fluffy and sweet. There is insta-love. The world building is nonexistent. I even hated the narrator of the audiobook. Definitely the worst read of 2018 so far.

The Hazel Wood by Melissa Albert

This is the second worst read of 2018 for me. I was really pumped for this book because it sounded like the main character would go to this mansion, the Hazel Wood, and have all kinds of weird creepy things happen to her. Well she does go to the Hazel Wood, but by the time she got there, I didn’t even care anymore. The first two-thirds of the book was a repetitive contemporary. I don’t mind contemporaries, but I do not care for it when I’ve been promised a fantasy story.

Lying in Wait by Liz Nugent

Lying in Wait was marketed as an “unputdownable psychological thriller with an ending that lingers long after turning the final page.” No, no it is not. This was a daytime soap opera in novel form. The book was about 75 pages too long for me to enjoy it. And the ending was definitely not “shocking,” as some reviews had promised.

And there you have it! At least there are only four books on this list. I hope I don’t have to add any more books this year, but if I do, I will be sure to update y’all as the year progresses.

What is your most disappointing read of 2018 so far? Let me know in the comments!

    1. I really wanted to like Lying in Wait, but it is not a fast-paced thriller. I seriously got Days of Our Lives vibes from the book!

Thank you so much for nominating me for the Mystery Blogger Award. I will work on my post this week 🙂
